Man Beats Relative To Death For Calling His Father a Witch

In a terrible turn of events in Nyakach, Kisumu County, an 18-year-old boy found himself behind bars after fatally attacking a relative who supposedly accused his father of being a witch. The event in Dirubi village escalated when an irate mob took justice into their own hands, killing the accused boy’s father and destroying property.

According to accounts, the fight began when the adolescent and his father, Valentine Ochieng, ran into the relative in question while returning home. Tempers erupted as the relative allegedly accused Ochieng of witchcraft, resulting in a fierce altercation. In the heat of the situation, the young man allegedly hit the relative with a wooden stick, resulting in fatal injuries.

The victim was transported to Nyabondo Mission Hospital and then moved to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), where he died from his injuries.

In a dramatic escalation, an enraged mob gathered at the suspect’s father’s home, wanting vengeance. They tortured Ochieng to mob punishment before burning down four dwellings on the site. The violence and devastation highlighted the depth of emotions as well as the situation’s volatility.

Local officials have initiated an inquiry into the incident, attempting to determine the sequence of events that led to the unfortunate end. The arrests include the adolescents who committed the fatal assault and members of the mob participating in the subsequent mayhem.

The terrible incident serves as a sharp reminder of the risks of vigilantism, as well as the devastating effects of unbridled anger and accusation in communities. As investigations continue, the impacted families deal with the fallout from loss and devastation, emphasizing the critical need for conversation and dispute resolution processes to prevent future catastrophes. The community now wants any person suspected of witchcraft to be smoked out.
