The Pros and Cons of Contraceptives Unveiled

Contraceptives are a common topic among university students, as many have used them at some point. Condoms, both male and female, are widely known, while birth control pills are particularly common among women. Dr. Grace Kanyi, a gynecologist, provided detailed insights on this topic during an interview with Kenya’s popular TV station, Citizen TV.

Birth control pills contain estrogen and progesterone hormones and come in two forms: the patch and the pills. The patch is applied once a week for three weeks, while the pills are taken daily for three weeks. Dr. Kanyi emphasized the importance of consulting a medical professional before starting any contraceptive regimen.

Many women are pressured by their partners to use birth control pills instead of condoms. While this can be safe if prescribed by a gynecologist, it’s important to note that these pills can have serious side effects for some women. These side effects include an increased risk of diabetes, unexplained vaginal bleeding, complications for breastfeeding mothers, headaches, mood disorders, blood clots (which can be life-threatening if they occur in the lungs), breast pain, blurred vision, and vomiting.

However, there are also significant benefits to using birth control pills when they are suitable for your body. These benefits include better menstrual cycle control, reduced menstrual pain, decreased bleeding for those with heavy periods, and extended cycle lengths, which can reduce the risk of endometrial and ovarian cancer. Additionally, birth control pills can improve skin conditions by reducing acne due to the suppression of androgens like testosterone.

It is crucial for women to understand the potential outcomes of using birth control pills without medical advice. Some women resort to dangerous measures, such as removing their fallopian tubes or uterus, to deal with unwanted pregnancies, often after using contraceptives that were not suitable for their bodies. This can lead to infertility, which can be devastating for those who wish to have children in the future.

In summary, while contraceptives can offer significant benefits, they also come with risks that must be carefully considered. It is essential to consult with healthcare professionals to ensure that any contraceptive method is safe and appropriate for your individual health needs.

Stay informed and make safe choices to protect your health and future.
