The Public Transport and Safety Authority (PTSA) has responded to concerns raised by drivers regarding the high number of accidents on our roads, particularly as we enter the stormy season. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and prudence during this period. General George Njao of the NTSA reiterated the authority’s commitment to road safety, announcing increased monitoring by NTSA and NPS officers on major roadways. This initiative will encompass speed checks, license verification, random breathalyzer tests for drunk driving, crackdowns on overloaded vehicles and illegal PSVs.

Motorists are advised to drive at reduced speeds, especially during storms and on slippery roads. Additional directives include promptly removing stalled vehicles, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, and using headlights for increased visibility. Furthermore, drivers are cautioned to drive cautiously after encountering waterlogged areas. Recent tragic accidents, including the loss of lives along Mombasa Road and other incidents, underscore the urgency of these measures.

Director George emphasized the importance of reducing speed, as heavy rains result in slippery surfaces that compromise braking capabilities and increase the risk of accidents. He also highlighted instances of drivers recklessly navigating flooded roads and surfaces. The PTSA urges drivers to resist recklessness and encourages passengers to advocate for their safety and speak out against negligent driving practices.

These directives echo the principles laid out by the late Minister Michuki, whose policies were effective in promoting road safety. However, Director George acknowledges that the success of these measures hinges on law enforcement agencies taking decisive action against negligent drivers. It is a collective responsibility to prioritize road safety, and accountability extends to all stakeholders, including government officials, law enforcement agencies, drivers, and passengers. Only through concerted efforts and adherence to regulations can we mitigate the risks and ensure safer roads for all.
