A significant development has unfolded for farmers nationwide as the government concludes its thorough examination of subsidized fertilizers, providing much-needed clarity and assurance on their safety and quality. Amidst a period of uncertainty and speculation, the Ministry of Agriculture has released a statement affirming that fertilizers stocked at National Cereal and Produce Board (NCPB) depots adhere to mandated standards, except for products distributed by KEL Chemicals.

Farmers had expressed fear over the quality of subsidized fertilizers, with suspicions particularly surrounding certain products distributed by KEL Chemicals. However, after a thorough examination, the Ministry of Agriculture has deemed all fertilizers, except those from KEL Chemicals, to be of standard quality.

The government’s decisive action underscores its commitment to safeguarding the interests of farmers and ensuring the integrity of agricultural practices. Following the discovery that fertilizers branded Kelphos Plus, Kelphos Gold, and NPK 10:26:10 from KEL Chemicals did not meet the necessary standards, the company has been suspended, and its products seized.

This move serves not only to rectify the situation but also to prevent any potential adverse effects on agricultural activities. By impounding the stocks of substandard fertilizers distributed by KEL Chemicals, the government aims to mitigate any possible repercussions on crop yields and farmers’ livelihoods.

Additionally, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has taken legal action against KEL Chemicals under the Standards Act Cap 496, emphasizing the importance of adherence to quality standards in the agricultural sector. For farmers who have already acquired fertilizers from KEL Chemicals, the Ministry of Agriculture advises immediate discontinuation of use.

This announcement brings a sense of relief to farmers who rely on subsidized fertilizers for their agricultural activities. With the government’s assurance of quality and its proactive measures against substandard products, farmers can proceed with confidence, knowing that their investments in fertilizers will yield positive outcomes for their crops and livelihoods.
