Kenyan workers have a reason to smile after President William Ruto ordered for a 6% increase in their minimum wage during this year’s 59th Labour Day celebrations held at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi

The last increment was declared in the year 2022 by former President Uhuru Kenyatta

The increment of 12% translated to Ksh1628 further increasing the workers minimum pay to atleast Ksh15,200 , the current rate.

The President William Ruto has also mandated the Labour Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore to sit with the relevant committee and ensure the minimum wage is increased to the said percentage.

“Tukubaliane mshahara tutaongeza namna gani. Nataka sasa nimwambie waziri wa Labour, wakae chini na Ile kamati inahusika, minimum wage atleast tuongeze na 6% na mtaniambia vile hesabu hiyo itafanyika,” said Ruto.

Labour and Social Protection Canine Secretary Florence Bore assured public servants in the country that their jobs are safe despite the proposal by public servants’ performance delivery management Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria to have them employed on contract basis.

“I want to assure Kenyan workers especially, the public servants that their jobs are safe, that the opinions they heard from my colleagues were personal opinions, we have not discussed that at Cabinet Level. So, they should be comfortable to work and if anything comes up, I will be defending the rights of workers.” Bore underscored.

Bore also noted that the government will be supporting workers Unions, calling on striking doctors to return to work.

This year’s Labour Day Celebrations were marked at a time when many are grappling with tough economic times.
