Atwoli acknowledged that President William Ruto demonstrated superior intelligence and employed a more effective campaign strategy compared to his preferred candidate, Raila Odinga, who represented the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party.
Following a thorough grilling by show host Jeff Koinange regarding his previous dismissive remarks toward Ruto’s candidacy during the campaign period, the outspoken COTU boss explained. He highlighted the importance of thorough preparation and strategic planning, admitting that Ruto’s team outperformed their Azimio counterparts in these aspects. Atwoli conceded that Ruto’s intelligence and effective campaign organization contributed significantly to his success in reaching the presidency.
“Because all that we were saying, be it in public rallies, they were monitoring, sieving, focusing, collecting data based on it, and also assessing themselves. And then they say ‘This what Atwoli is saying, does not match with what is happening here…we can prevent it this way…’ And they succeeded in getting the right answer more than what we used to say.”
The trade unionist stopped short of admitting that the Azimio coalition may have lost the election due to complacency stemming from their alliance with the sitting president and access to state resources. Atwoli highlighted the importance of effective mechanisms in securing victory, contrasting their reliance on external factors with Ruto’s strategic planning and adaptability. He acknowledged Ruto’s intelligence and praised his campaign’s diligence in adjusting to changing circumstances, ultimately saluting his opponent’s astuteness in securing the win.
